Weekend Workshop: Sculpting the Hand in Clay with Asia Mathis on March 8th + 9th

March 8th + 9th, 9am - 4pm
This weekend workshop invites participants to explore the expressive power of the hand through ceramic sculpture. Through guided instruction and hands-on practice students will delve into the anatomy, symbolism, and emotional resonance of the hand.
Objectives:
Teach participants detailed techniques for sculpting their own hand in clay.
Foster mindfulness and observation by focusing on personal physical details.
Create a meaningful art piece that reflects each participant’s story and creativity.
Structure:
Day 1: Observing and Beginning to Sculpt
Welcome and introduction.
Demonstration: observing and measuring your hand for sculptural accuracy. Techniques for building a sturdy armature and sculpting basic hand shapes.
Hands-on practice: starting the structure of the hand sculpture. We will be building in solid clay that will be hollowed out on Day 2.
Refining the shape: adding volume, articulating joints, and establishing the hand’s pose.
Individual guidance and troubleshooting as participants refine their work.
Short talk and slide show in which Asia will discuss her own work, and take any questions regarding context, building, and surface technique.
Day 2: Bringing the Hand to Life
Hollowing out forearms and hands after clay has set up overnight
Guided time for further refining of the hand
Surface design: options for texturing, carving, or adding subtle decorative elements to enhance the sculptural effect.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have:
A detailed and creative ceramic sculpture of their own hand.
New technical skills in observational sculpting and clay handling.
A meaningful connection to their hand as a symbol of identity and creativity.
A finished piece ready for firing and glazing.
